Beth's Review

5 stars

Beholden is the fabulous conclusion in the Belonging duet and once again Corrine Michaels did not disappoint with Catherine and Jackson’s story. This book was another refreshing great mix of hot sexy chemistry, with a side of swoon worthy romance, add in some further heartache and angst but with it all turned up a notch in this second book.

Beholden picks right up where we left off in Beloved so if you have not read it, stop right now and read no further. In the end of book one just as Catherine is asking for Jackson’s forgiveness for pushing him away, he gets terrible tragic news and once again is having to deal with the loss of a loved in. Not able to take one more loss this time has pushed Catherine away and has had to take care of issues with the security company which takes him to Afghanistan where he becomes badly wounded and we are left with him on the brink of death. With things still touch and go with Jackson, Catherine is at his side, she has almost lost the one man she truly loves and she is not giving him up without a fight. But what these two have facing them is many struggles and is love truly going to be enough to keep them together through both the good and the bad.

In this book the author really stepped it up a notch for me with both these characters. I love how we got to see truly how strong Catherine was and all that she had to overcome. It was truly so enjoyable seeing such an awesome strong female lead character holding her own, even at times when she was heartbroken and still in love, she stood on her own.   I also loved that she wasn’t like the normal female MC and expecting honesty but not giving it. She was honest with him at all times, even when she knew he would be upset and mad at her, she told him the truth and stood her ground.

I must say Jackson was just so much yummier in this one, my heart truly ached for him, once again he must deal with lost and the guilt that he feels responsible for his friends death. And on top of all that he must deal with his own struggles to get back on his feet after being badly wounded. These two characters were so amazingly strong and at times stubborn and pig headed but I loved every minute of it.

From the moment I picked up this book I could not put it down. At times I felt like I was on an emotional rollercoaster with these two leaving me sitting on the edge of my seat and biting my fingernails. Many times I was left heartbroken with my heart in my throat not knowing what was going happen next with these two. Right from the start of this series you could see these two were meant for each other, they just need to get past all the baggage and struggles that followed them and they both needed to let the walls down they built around their heart. This book left me cheering these two on, wanting to see them survive

Overall I absolutely love this book and loved this series. I must say I am still a little shocked that this was Corinne’s debut series, the writing was so well done and felt like a seasoned writer. These are an absolute must read and Corrine Michaels just found a new fan, I will definitely be reading anything she writes going forward. Would love to see this duet turned into a series, it held such great characters that truly had stories to tell, ones I would definitely read!

Tangled Paths ( Intertwined Hearts #3) by Kimi Flores (Josie’s Review)

**Although this novel includes mature language and adult situations, there are no detailed sex scenes**

Is it possible to flee your past? Or does it sit patiently, waiting for your return?

Tired of traveling the world in order to escape reality, Bri Hunter has finally found a place to call home. Settled into Santa Barbara, close to her brother and cousin, she’s ready for a little peace. Wanting to avoid the tormenting, incessant calls she receives, she throws herself into helping her sister-in-law’s growing floral business. It doesn’t take long to run smack into the one guy she’d given up on ever seeing again.

It’s been five years since Josh Tucker has sobered up, left his Hollywood lifestyle far behind, and sheltered himself in his horse ranch in Santa Ynez, California. If it hadn’t been for his family, he probably wouldn’t be around to tell his story. When a beautiful brunette shows up at his cousin’s vineyard, something in her spiteful eyes tells him their paths have tangled together before.

As Josh begins to uncover who Bri is, he finds himself falling for her. Will he find a way to convince her to trust him? And will she be able to let go of the past and move forward? When a traumatic event strikes, Bri will have to decide if she’s going to let life continue to cripple her…or set her free.

~ Reviewers agree that although this is technically the 3rd book in the Intertwined Hearts series, it reads smoothly as a stand alone as well ~

Josie's review

4.5 stars

This is the third book in the Entwined Series. I am going on the record here and saying Tangled Paths is by far the best one in this series. I love Ms. Flores writing. She has a way of writing a story with such passion and emotion that you feel a deep connection with the characters.

Josh and Bri’s story is an emotional journey where they each are dealing with demons in their past. Bri has loved Josh since college. She gave Josh a precious gift thinking she was special only to be left broken and shattered. Fast forward 7 years when their paths cross again. Josh has memories of a brown eyed girl but can’t remember much more then that since during that time in his life he was constantly drunk. Josh had left the Hollywood life behind and has settled in Santa Ynez California. When he sees a beautiful brunette at his vineyard he keeps seeing those brown eyes. This woman hates him and doesn’t give him the time of day.

With the help of some visiting friends, Josh finally remembers who Bri is and just how special the gift was that she gave him. Josh is not the same man he was 7 years ago. He lives a quiet life and wants to make up for the way he treated Bri. He remembers that he was comfortable with Bri and that she was special. Something he hasn’t felt in years. The author does an amazing job with showing the changes he has made over the years as well as his remorse for what happened all those years ago. You fall in love with Josh and can see just how nice of a man he is. Now that their paths have crossed again, Josh is determined to show Bri just how much he has changed and how much they are meant to be together.

“I’m sure you hate me and I can’t say I blame you, but can I please explain? Now that I know it’s you, I’ve gotta try to make up for this somehow.”

“That doesn’t matter anymore. It’s in the past and it’s over. The only thing we have to deal with now is that we’re going to keep running into each other.”

Ms. Flores created Bri’s character in such a way, that you really feel for this woman. Bri is strong, brave, tough, funny and even though her past is dark she is a fighter. Bri has been hurt before and the one person that is supposed to love her unconditional is the one that has done the worst damage, her mother. When Josh broke her heart, she thought she would never love again. She did not trust easily and never opened her heart to anyone else again. Eventually Josh and Bri forgive each other and slowly build a relationship. There is chemistry and sparks there but Bri just has to trust that Josh will not hurt her again. You can see and feel the true love these characters have for one another. I really could feel their passion, honesty and genuine love. Their relationship develops over time, nothing is rushed.

“I’ve often wondered, if there’s a place on earth where I actually belong.”

“Bri, you do belong. You’re important to all of us. You don’t even realize how much we all need you. And someday soon, I hope you’ll believe that you belong with me. Because I already feel like I belong with you.”

“Thank you, for caring about me, and for believing me. For seeing the good in me.”

I will warn you, their story is hard and it will make you cry and scream but I am so happy with the final result. Josh and Bri go through a lot to be with one another with their trouble pasts, shocking family secrets and learning to trust one another. The author does not write their story to be all hearts and flowers. She gives us some grit and some angst because honestly what relationship does not take work. I honestly think that is why I loved this book so much. It felt real, I felt their emotions and pain and I got their story. I am, excited to see what Ms. Flores will come up with next. After reading all 3 books in this series, I just know it is going to blow be away. A definite must read.

She’s planning on publishing the last two books in this series by the end of the year. Book 3, Grafted Vines, is Dani & Zachary’s story and book 4, Tangled Paths, is Bri & Josh’s journey. And because every character has a story to tell, there’s a possibility of a novella about Stefen and Bri’s mother’s life. There’s a reason she acts the way she does and she may bug Kimi enough to have it written out.

Josie's review

4.5 stars

After reading the blurb for Forgiving Reed by C.A. Harms, my interest was piqued, I love a story about second chance love.   I had the pleasure of reading two other books by C.A. Harms in the Scarred by Love series. I really enjoyed her writing and of course I was anxious to get my hands on this one and once again she does not disappoint. She has a way of writing her novels in such an intriguing and in depth way that I find myself connecting with her characters.   Once again the author starts off with a prologue that is emotional, raw and gripping that just keeps things going right up to the end. I am a sucker for a cowboy. I don’t know what it is, but this City girl here is going to start moving south.

After Kori walked in and saw her boyfriend Reed cheating with the town slut Kimberly, she was left heartbroken, betrayed and devastated. She leaves her town behind, goes to college and puts distance between her first love and best friend. While in college, she is trying to get over the betrayal and in the process she meets Blake. Blake manages to help Kori heal and in the process the two fall in love and are expecting their first child together. Kori’s life is shattered once more when she loses Blake in an accident. Left to raise their child Rhett alone, she is forced to move back home, back to where the boy that broke her hurt still lives. I will tell you Kori goes through such an emotional journey, you will cry, laugh and get angry with her and for her. Mt heart broke for her over and over. Kori struggles with moving on and trying to hold onto the memories of Blake and deal with forgiving the one person that betrayed her trust.

Reed made one bad decision years ago, he was young, stupid, drunk and thinking with his raging hormones. He regretted cheating on Kori with Kimberly and has never gotten over his true love. Kori was everything to him but by the time he realized it, Kori was gone and in love with Blake. Loosing Kori and his mother has changed him over the years. He is mature, stable and no longer the town bad boy. He is settled. When he sees Kori is back in town, he wants nothing more than to see her smile and be happy. He is willing to do anything to see her not broken even if it just means being her friend. He knows he made the worst decision that night that cost him everything and Kori is not willing to forgive easily.

“You gonna act like you hate me forever, Kori?”

“I think I’ll just stick to hating you forever.”

“You don’t hate me, Kori, not like you say you do. I got drunk and fu*ked up, I will always regret that mistake.”

“You Reed, took what we had and threw it away, for a quick roll in the hay with the town slut. That was the moment I started hating you.”

“Whenever you decide you need a friend, when you feel like you just need to get it you lean on me, Mori. Let me here for you. Let me be a shoulder to cry on. Let me be your friend.”

I hate cheating like majorly, so I really wanted to hate Reed’s character but the author wrote his character in such a loving, selfless and giving way that I couldn’t help but fall in love with him. With his persistence, Kori eventually forgave Reed and over time they became friends. He became the rock for Kori and Rhett, but trusting Reed completely is hard for Kori especially when the town slut is constantly trying to intervene.

“I want to do this with you; I want to go all in. I’m ready to move forward, with you. I just need to make sure you want the same thing.”

“You’re joking right? You know I want you and Rhett. I’ve wanted you my whole life, and Rhett is the best kind of bonus. I want in, baby, completely in without hesitation.”

Things are not easy for Reed and Kori. She will not be second best and Kimberly is a hard line for her. She will not tolerate her being around Reed. The author gives us just enough drama and angst in the story to keep it exciting, but the real story is about forgiveness and moving on. My heart broke for Kori because she was confused with her feelings for Blake and Reed. She thought being with Reed was betraying what she had with Blake. Overall I really loved this novel and can’t wait for the second book in this series. Oh and the sex, was crazy amazing also.

“Home, right here. This is where I belong.”

I did my best to clean us up. Placing a stack of pancakes onto a warming plate I took them to the table and set up everything else. When everything was ready it was time for the fun.

“Hey buddy, you wanna help mommy wake up Reed?” He didn’t answer me, instead he darted off toward the bedroom. I hurried after him as he struggled to climb up onto the bed. Once he got his footing he crawled up beside him and began bouncing on his stomach.

“Up…up.” He chanted as he continued to use Reed as a human trampoline. I laughed from the foot of the bed. Reed grunted each time Rhett’s butt connected with his ribs.

He grabbed him around his little waist and rolled to the side, pinning him down. “Well look what I have here.” Reed held up his opened hand above Rhett. Making it appear as if it were a claw. “It’s the cowboy tamer and it found a tiny cowboy that needs to be whipped into shape.”

Reed began tickling Rhett’s ribs and stomach. His giggles filled the room and he wiggled from side to side. Reed’s laughter followed and I was in awe of them. They were both beautiful in that moment. Smiling, completely lost in the happiness of one another. Sometimes it was so hard to accept that this was my life. I got to experience these amazing moments and I was so blessed.

Their laughter finally slowed down as Reed crawled from bed, lifting Rhett in to his arms. “I smell pancakes.” His eyes got big and he began bouncing up and down still holding Rhett close. “Did you and mommy make me pancakes?” He asked Rhett and in return my little man smiled proudly. He nodded his head and looked my way.

“Rhett made them, I just observed.”

Reed walked toward me, kissing my forehead. “Good morning beautiful.”

This time, he’s out to show Brynn that the imperfect man might be the best mistake of her life . .

Debbie's review

4 stars

I was super excited that I was going to be able to read and review this book. It is the second book in this series and I truly enjoyed the first book and could not wait to dig into this one.

This book centers around Brynn Dalton. She is an uptight Orthodontist that was bullied as a child. She put up these walls to protect herself and basically her life follows all these rules that she has put into place.

Will Thatcher is Brynn’s sister’s best friend. Since childhood they have tormented each other. The banter and chemistry between those two was fantastic. Brynn was uptight and all about stability and Will was laid back and wanted to live each day to the fullest. The thing is sometimes opposites attract and no matter how hard you try to fight it one day you realize just what you might be throwing away.

When I first started reading this book I felt sorry for Brynn but as the story progressed I wanted to crawl into my kindle and beat the crap out of her. I felt she turned into a whiny, self-centered bitch that thought she was better than Will. She never took the time to really get to know him. It was always about what she wanted. Several times my heart broke for the way she treated him.

“You’re a thirty something man-whore. The suburbs are the worst possible place for you.”

I loved everything about Will. He was sweet and caring and basically went out of his way to prove to Breen that life wasn’t all about rules. She needed to step out of her comfort zone and learn to live.

“I’ve loved you ever day. Every single Goddamn day since you first flicked your hair at me on the football field in that tiny cheerleading skirt.”

“I moved because I couldn’t stand the thought of watching you with other guys. Not after we’d been together. I moved because I didn’t want to be your dirty little secret, Brynn.”

Overall, the book flowed really well and it was full of angst. I was Will’s biggest cheerleader. I was hoping he would be able to shake some common sense into Brynn before it was to late.

Will knew exactly the moment she’d seen him. He felt it like a shock to the balls, and he wanted a shot of whisky. Now.

It had taken a full fifty-seven minutes since he’d walked into the door until her ice blue eyes had locked on him, and that was including the ridiculous amount of time she’d spent in the bathroom.

She made him wait another twenty minutes before seeking him out.

But what was an extra seventy-seven minutes when you’d already waited a lifetime?

Will watched her approach, her expression schooled into an expression of polite indifference. She stopped a several inches in front of him, and only the slight narrowing of gray-blue eyes giving any indication that she wanted him dead. Which of course, she did.

“Brynn,” he said, matching her prim tone.

He felt a little jolt of disappointment at her vapid smile. It was the same courteous, reveal-nothing expression she’d given everyone else in the room. He’d been kind of hoping for that special brand of bitchy that she’d always reserved just for him.

“You’re looking a little wider around the hips,” he said with an insulting glance up and down. She hadn’t, but the thought that she’d gained an ounce would keep her up at night.

Her smile slipped for a second, and for a moment he realized if he’d struck a nerve. Normally he wouldn’t dare touch the subject of a women’s weight. He wasn’t a total ass.

But Brynn had had the same perfectly slim figure as long as he’d known her — she wouldn’t tolerate anything else. Her physical appearance was flawless.

Her personality, however…

“And you’re looking…manwhorish,” she said with the usual venom.

Ah. There the old Brynn. He nearly smiled. “So. Nice party,” he said blandly.

“Yes, it was sweet of Sophie to put it together.”

“Mm hmm,” he said, taking a sip of his red wine. “And exactly how intense was the urge to strangle her when you learned that she’d planned a surprise party instead of the usual boring birthday dinner with your family?”

This time the smile faded all together. “Don’t. Don’t do that thing.”

“What thing?”

“That thing where you make it a point of thinking you know me better than anyone else.”

Don’t I? He stifled the thought. For now.

Title: Whatever You Do (Try Again, #2)

Author: Stephanie Smith

Release Date: January 15, 2014

Genre: Contemporary Romance

How do you trust someone who is everything you’re trying to avoid?

Harper Lindell is having a bad day. You know, if a bad day consists of getting fired from your cushy job and then catching your boyfriend red handed playing hide the salami.

Sick of meeting the same guys over and over, Harper decides to try her luck at Internet dating. How bad could it be? Right?

Tate Washington wasn’t looking to meet anyone. Still dealing with the consequences of his one serious relationship, all he’s interested in is revamping his family’s behind-the-times café.

He didn’t plan on seeing the beautiful receptionist from Argo again, walking into his life to use his café as a dating hub, and using him as a BFF.

Can Harper really trust Tate, who is everything she thinks she needs to steer clear of?

Can Tate wait while Harper works through her insecurities and fears?

“Andrew?” I question as I reach the table.

“Yes. Harper, hello.” He shakes my hand and the first thing I notice are his warm eyes. They are gentle and sincere and I feel instantly comfortable with him. “Take a seat, please.”

He gestures to my seat before pulling it out for me to sit in. I smile up at him in thanks for the chivalrous action as I slide into the chair.

During our emails back and forth this week, Andrew and I had figured out that we are from similar small towns not far from each other. We laugh about all the misguided town folk and the classic ‘types’ every town has. The town clown who has thought of every invention under the sun, the do-gooder mayor, the old lady gossip group, and the crazy minister and his family. Of course I didn’t laugh at that last one, as true as it is, being the daughter of a minister and all.

“So what do your parents do?” Andrew asks.

“Umm.” I stall looking for a distraction, not wanting to make to him feel bad.

“What can I get you guys?” Tate offers and I’m grateful for the interruption.

“Oh gosh I haven’t even looked yet,” Andrew says as he picks up the menu from the table.

“Just the usual for me please.” As my eyes reach Tate’s his are wide with horror. I sit upright at the urgency in his expression wondering what the hell is going on.

He nods his head in Andrew’s direction and I glance over. Andrew is studying the menu oblivious to mine and Tate’s silent conversation.

I look back at Tate giving him a ‘what’ look as he scratches his head then stiffly nods back in Andrew’s direction.

I sigh frustrated and look back at Andrew. He looks up from his menu and smiles at me before turning to Tate and placing his order.

I still don’t see a problem and look back to Tate with a ‘just fucking tell me’ look.

He begins running his hand through his hair as he harshly nods in Andrew’s direction again. I don’t even bother looking at Andrew again, knowing I’m not going to see anything different than before.

With wide eyes and a clenched jaw, I get out through gritted teeth, “I think that’s all.”

Tate sighs heavily, clearly frustrated and storms away from the table.

I shake my head and when I turn back to Andrew he is staring at me in confusion. “Sorry,” I giggle embarrassed he witnessed that final interaction between Tate and me.

“No worries.” He is sweet but his voice is wary. Tate and I probably looked like two mute idiots. How humiliating.

Andrew seamlessly continues our conversation. I use this opportunity to study him and search for the meaning of Tate’s irrational display.

I didn’t really focus on Andrew’s features before. He’s not ugly, but he’s definitely not in the same calibre as Tate or Glenn.

Now that I’m looking closer at him, there is something off about his looks. I can’t put my finger on it but something doesn’t fit. It has to be something small like his eyes aren’t in line or his facial features are too far apart, maybe bad teeth or ears that are too big or small, but I can’t see any of that. All his features seem symmetrical and in proper proportion to his face, but something is definitely not right.

Out of the corner of my eye I see Tate flailing his arms about. I shoot a glance his way trying not to be noticeable only to see he is frantically running his hand through his hair before tugging on the ends. No, tugging is too tame, he is pulling hard on his hair.

I glance around the café and no one has seemed to notice Tate’s complete and mental breakdown. He’s lost it. Maybe it’s all the coffee fumes, they are really strong in here.

When I look back towards Tate he is on his way over to the table carrying our hot drinks. I roll my eyes at his determined stare and wonder what antics he has planned for us this time.

Tate doesn’t falter as he strides towards the table and proceeds to drop a hot cup of coffee all over the table and into Andrew’s lap. I gasp in shock at what is unfolding in front of me. Andrew jumps from his seat, squealing like a small girl. I watch horrified as his hair falls off his head and lands on the table in front of me.

My mouth drops open as I just stare at Andrew’s toupee lying in spilt coffee. Glancing up at Andrew I see the heat rising on his face and shiny bald head. I smile awkwardly at him as I pick up his hairpiece and hold it out to him as if it’s a pair of dirty underwear and I can’t stand to touch it.

He quickly swipes it from my hand and places it on his head, but not before I notice his whole head, bright red in mortification. It’s like a beacon calling in planes for landing. Andrew stares at me, his hairpiece on backwards and coffee leaking from it, dripping all down his face.

“I’m so sorry Andrew,” I whisper, as I place both my hands over my mouth. Shit, I can feel the laughter rising.

“No, I’m sorry Harper.” My gut churns on his behalf at the humiliation he must be feeling. The silence of the café surrounds us, lucky it’s not overly busy at this time of night. Andrew glares at Tate who smiles and raises his hands innocently, before Andrew storms out of the café not breathing another word, just leaving a trail of coffee in his wake.

“You’re welcome,” Tate says casually as he pulls a clean chair up to the table, before relaxing back into it and crossing his ankles in front of him.

Genre: Erotic/Psychological Thriller

Release Date: November 2014

Cover Designer: Cover Me, Darling

Words are funny things.

Their meaning, the pictures they paint in the minds of those that hear them: they’re not always the same and to me at least, that makes them meaningless.

Take for instance the phrase ‘black widow’. Those words conjure the image of a spider, an eight-legged creature with the red imprint of an hourglass on its abdomen.

However, instead of speaking of an arachnid, of the resident of a spindly and dew-laden web, the people who whisper those words are talking about something much different.

They’re talking about me.

From what I’m told, I’m called the Black Widow because no man I’ve ever loved has survived.

Yet, I have no memory of any of it.

My new home leads me to the definition of another vague and meaningless word.

It’s a place where I’m supposed to seek refuge.

A place of retreat and security.

It’s a place where I’m supposed to be kept safe because I’m sick.

But the definition for this place is wrong and the word becomes meaningless when you’re tucked away and made silent by drugs and pretty white jackets.

My name is Alexandra Sutton and this is the story of what happened when I was imprisoned inside an Asylum.

The Author

Lily White is a dark writer who likes to dabble on the taboo side of eroticism. Most of the time she can be found wandering around aimlessly while her mind is stuck in some twisted power play between two characters in her head. You may recognize her in public by the confused expression, random mumbling, and occasional giggle while thinking up a scene. Lily’s favorite things in life are reading, thinking about reading, buying books for reading….and writing. Her other secret pleasure is meeting with her plot editor in public to discuss her books and watching the shocked expressions of the people around her that don’t realize she’s talking about a book. When Lily is not reading, writing, wandering or freaking out innocent bystanders, she’s sleeping.
