Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled Series, returns with the first installment of the Legal Briefs Series.
A Washington, DC, defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing—with his southern drawl, disarming smile, and captivating green eyes, he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him, and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.
Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.
Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart, the mother of his beloved ten-year-old daughter. Jenny is getting married—to someone who isn’t him.
That’s definitely not part of the plan.
Sofia Santos is a city-raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.
But when Stanton, her “friend with mind-blowing benefits,” begs her for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi, to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves. Her head tells her she’s crazy…and her heart says something else entirely.
What happens when you mix a one-stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage, and a gun-toting Nana?
The Bourbon flows, passions rise, and even the best-laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.
What a really great story that had a different twist to it. I always love a story with a hot hunky suit wearing professional, especially a really sexy lawyer and with having heard great things about the author’s Tangled series I decided I would check this new series out. I have to say I wasn’t completely sure what to expect or how the story would play out after reading the synopsis but I will say I was intrigued. I am not a huge lover of Love Triangles so after reading in the synopsis about him taking his “friend with benefits” to the wedding of his high school sweetheart (who was also the mother of his 10 year old daughter) I wasn’t sure how it would play out but was pleasantly surprised.
Stanton Shaw has known Jenny Munroe for most of his life and has been in love with her just as long. They were high school sweethearts, the perfect couple, he the football jock and her the head cheerleader. They had dreams of what their future looked like but all that changed with 2 blue lines. Jenny not wanting him to give up his dreams of making a life for them convinced him to head off to college to get his law degree. Now 10 years later Jenny and Stanton still love each other but live in separate places while they raise their daughter and have an unconventional and very open relationship. Once again everything changes with the news that Jenny is to be married, not willing to give her up he heads home to fight for what is his. Knowing he will have a hard time keeping his head on straight and keeping his cool he takes his co-worker and good friend (with benefits) Sofia to help him. Sofia is a hard worker lawyer at Stanton’s firm that is driven to make partner and who knows about Stanton and Jenny’s relationship and is okay with enjoying her friendship and it’s “benefits” that she has with Stanton. The question is what will happen when they both realize there is more to this “friends with benefits” between them.
There truly is nothing better than a great story with a really strong confident heroine and I must say Sophia did not disappoint. Sophia is a hard working woman trying to make a name for herself in a very dominant man’s world and I love how well she holds her own. She beautiful and confident, she knows her assets and she doesn’t have issues using them but best part, her biggest asset is her brain. She’s funny and sassy and she knows what she wants and has no problem going after it. But she also still has that female side that makes her want more than just work and sex, she wants that special someone, and she has found him, only problem is, his heart belongs to someone else.
Stanton Shaw is truly a fabulous book boyfriend. He’s cocky and confident and he’s a smooth talker but he’s good at it. Damn he’s good at anything he does and boy can he make your panties wet. You know he’s all talk and is using charm to win you over but you can’t help but fall under his spell, he’s just that good. His life is perfect, he’s got his high school sweetheart and his daughter still living at home where they grew up and stays in constant contact with. They have an unconventional open relationship, he’s got a great job in the city at a great firm working towards becoming a partner with his great winning streak in court. He’s got great friends, especially one in particular who they have added benefits to the equation the last 6 months. They are perfect together, neither want a relationship, both are career driven and she gives up all control in the bedroom and he is able to let the sexy Alpha side of him out to play. But all that changes when he gets a wedding invitation to the other women in his life, the first women for him to ever love. And at that moment we then get to see a different Stanton, we get to see the Alpha caveman Stanton who is off to Mississippi to lay claim to what is his but we see how passionate he is, the great dad he is to Presley and see a softer side to him but as well we get to see how pig headed and stubborn he truly can be.
This story had two really awesome main characters that I couldn’t help but connect with but it also had so many other great characters that I fell in love with. It was such a great fun group of characters that I can’t wait to see more of, I think this series is going to be a great one read. I loved their co-workers Brent and Jake, they added a lot of fun and humor to the story. I really loved Jenny, she truly loved Stanton but I loved that she was the one to move on and make him wake up. She was such an independent woman, yes she had her family to help her raise her daughter but for them to have the relationship they had over the past 10 years it really spoke to her character. And I loved getting to know both Jenny’s and Stanton’s family, especially Nana, she cracked me up so many times and I loved her at the end!
Overall this was a really fabulous read that I thoroughly enjoyed. The story was told from both Stanton and Sofia’s POV so we got to get in both of their heads and I loved that. The characters and the storyline was so well thought out that the book had a really great flow to it and from the moment I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down and it was over way too soon, I wanted so much more of Stanton and really hope in the coming books we will get to see so much more of him. The book was such a great mix of sweet and sexy, some funny moments but also moment where I was on the edge of my seat biting my nails needing to know what was going to happen. This was my first book by this author but it definitely won’t be my last and after getting a glimpse of Drew Evans, I will definitely be checking that series out next while I wait for the next book in this series.
