Title: Burning Ember (Harbingers Of Chaos #1)
Author: Darby Briar
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: August 27, 2015
The last thing she needs after running from one monster is to land in the lair of the Devil.
Twenty-one year old Ember flees her past with soot on her face, ash in her hair, and a promise. She’ll never let another man take away her freedom and treat her like she means nothing.
But that is exactly what Maverick Gunn, leader of the notorious Harbinger’s of Chaos Motorcycle Club seeks to do from the moment his lethal gaze locks on her. He burns her with every look. Every touch. Every word.
Ember’s only hope is to convince him she’s nothing like the woman who blackened his soul before he drags her down into the darkness with him.
I am going to be honest, I never read a book from this author before. I stumbled upon teasers from Burning Ember and they had me hooked and I begun to stalk the author’s page. Ms. Briar did an amazing job with the first book in this MC series. I love MC reads, and there is nothing light about that life. Romance and HEA’s are hard to come by. A real MC read is dangerous. It is filled with angst, drama, suspense, some ugly crying, real mean bikers with some dirty mouths and a huge dose of possessiveness. Things I love and that is exactly what we get in this book. I did not expect to feel the way I did. The author took me on an emotional journey with her characters. The story is told in dual POV’s and I loved getting inside two very complexed, tainted and amazing characters.
Ember AKA pumpkin AKA Doll has fled from a very abusive, controlling and very dangerous man. Getting away from her prison took so much courage and strength which I admired so much, but it also took Ember down a road of loneliness, poverty, despair and homelessness. I loved this character. She was strong, determined and she was a survivor. While running from her past her fate changes when she meets Lily. Lily belongs to the Harbinger of Chaos MC and she sees something in Ember that makes her want to help her. Ember is in survival mode. She is willing to do anything to have a roof over her head, a safe place to sleep, food and somewhere she can earn money.
At first I did not care for Maverick at all. Mav has been betrayed by a woman he thought he loved in the worst way. He no longer does relationships, just the club bunnies. His past has made him angry and the hardened man he is today. When he comes face to face with a red haired beauty who is similar to his ex he does not like it at all. When Maverick looks at Pumpkin he feels things he doesn’t want to feel so instead he decides he is going to make her life miserable at the MC so that she leaves. What he never expected was for Pumpkin to rise at every occasion and for his brothers to become her protector.
This relationship was hard to watch unfold. There is an intense chemistry and connection between the two. They both have similar pasts but Mav makes it so hard for Pumpkin and at times it was really painful to read. He only saw his past when he looked at her despite the thoughts and feelings she brought out of him. He finally relents and allows her to stay as a gift for a brother being released from prison where she would later become a club piece, but right from the start he wanted no other brother to touch her. Just as Mav was hard and cruel so was his jealously and need to keep everyone away from her. Ember felt things for Mav but she never would be a prisoner or a punching bag again for another man. She would do what was needed to survive and then move on.
Mav and Pumpkin’s road to love is not an easy one. Mav still has trouble with fully trusting Ember and Ember needs Mav to really see the woman she is and not the woman that broke his heart. When two very dangerous and determined enemies join forces to bring Mav to his knees and bring Ember back to the devil himself, will it be too late for Mav and Ember? Will Mav truly be able to let go of his past and see the real woman in front of him? How much more of Mav’s distrust and cruelty can Ember take?
All I can say is this is one book you really want to jump on and experience because it was just that good!
