A Dark Novel

Author: Mary E. Palmerin

Are people born pure?

Is evil learned, or is it birthed into one’s soul, like a fallen angel who was previously part of graciousness?

Rhys is decayed, black, and bad. He cut distortion out of his life years before, but he let her live; his only way to gain redemption once more.

As his sinful needs blanket him with dread, he seeks penance from the soul he saw as a second chance.

Is absolution too late for Rhys?

Josie's review

4.5 stars

Wow just wow, this story was nothing at all what I expected. I love a good dark and gritty story but this one was beyond dark. I had no idea what I was reading, this was different from anything I have read and experienced and for some reason I could not stop reading it. I just had to find out what in world was going on. The author did a remarkable job in writing this very graphic, disturbing and dare I say it evil story. Her words bled through each page while it grabbed and held me captive at every turn.

The author gives readers a warning, one that I did not take to heart, so please if you have a weak heart this is not the book for you – “dark scenes depicted heavily throughout this novel”. That truly is an understatement. This is my first time reading a book from this author and it certainly won’t be my last. I love how this author is not afraid to take readers out of their comfort zone to really deliver an unbelievable story that had me guessing all the way through.

While reading Redeeming Rhys, I found myself intrigued and fascinated with the mystery and darkness that surrounded this storyline. We are giving alternate POV’s told in both past in present. The darkness and complexity of the main characters relationship is confusing and full of uncertainty.

Rhys mind is malicious, warped and distorted. He is a cold blooded killer who does not feel any empathy for his victims. As a normal person would feel guilt, Rhys mind does not relate to that kind of emotion. His character is very complex and throughout this story he tries to prove that he is not a bad. Bad boy. He needs to find the one person from his past, the one that he believes to be his, the one person that knows deep down that he is not a bad, bad boy. This man is truly sick. We get glimpses of this man’s lifestyle and the evil he commits with such satisfaction. It sickened me, but I just could not stop reading. Throughout all his evil, his warped mind asserted his innocence to the atrocities he was accused of, and when we get to the real nitty and gritty, boy did I get played.

This was an absolute mind fuck. I did not see it coming and I was just blown away. I mean what the actual fuck just happened? I never saw it coming. Every character (and we have quite a few) tested my sanity and my emotions. The author’s writing was exceptional and rare. The darkness, plot and where she took this book was nothing I had ever read before. If you like dark reads, and I don’t mean fluffy rainbows, I am talking gut wrenching scenes this is your book.

She turned her chair around and beckoned with a manicured hand. “Come on,” she said. Riel blinked, not quite allowing herself to hope, and Laina smiled the way Riel liked, her face lighting up. “I promise I’ll be nice. I was just going to give you a lap dance lesson, unless it makes you uncomfortable.” She snorted. “I guess we could call it safety training.”
Riel smiled for real. “It doesn’t make me uncomfortable,” she said too quickly, and her cheeks got hot.
“Well, come on then.”
She went over shyly, and Laina took her hand. Riel’s skin tingled where it touched hers.
“Sit down,” Laina said, her lips quirking wryly.
She did, straddling the other dancer and lowering herself onto her lap. Riel’s breath caught in her throat. Laina’s beautiful breasts were pressed up against hers, and her fascinating lips were only inches away.
“Giving a lap dance isn’t hard,” Laina said, “but there is a sort of art to it. You want to get the guy off as quick as possible, so you can get your money and…well…” Her blue eyes filled with pity.
“So Isaias can get my money, and I can move on to the next nasty pervert,” Riel said, and Laina winced.
“I’m sorry, Riel, that’s such bullshit about the money.”
“It’s okay,” Riel said, smiling faintly. “Just show me how to do this.”
Laina returned the smile. “Every man is a little different. You have to maintain eye contact, watch his face to see what he likes, how he likes it…some like you to rub up against them slow, some like it fast. Some want you to giggle and bounce, some want you to purr. You get a feeling for what they want after a while, even at first glance. Then it becomes sort of like a game, like acting, and it’s fun, really. At least when they smell okay.” She wrinkled her nose.
Riel looked into Laina’s beautiful, blue eyes, which were the color of the sky in early spring. There was more kindness in them than there had been when they first met, but they were still distant, cold; Riel could sense the wall Laina built around her feelings, and she wanted that wall to crumble. Gently, she pressed her pussy up against Laina’s, through the layers of spandex and denim. A wave of heat coursed through her, and she wondered what it would feel like if they were both naked. She pressed harder, moving her hips in slow circles. She felt herself get wet, and a mischievous grin rose to her face. “Like this?” she asked.
Laina’s pupils grew larger, and she blinked. A faint, lopsided smile flitted over her lips. “Not bad.”

Payback’s a bitch — or it would be for Elle.

Fifteen years ago, my sister was kidnapped. For months, she’d endured hell. Somehow, she’d survived it. Someway, she’d escaped her captors. But it hadn’t mattered. In fact, it had been like losing her twice, because six weeks after she came home, she was dead, and the man responsible was alive and well, oblivious to her fate, ignorant to what he had coming.

Fifteen years I’d been waiting for this moment, all that time, planning, preparing, readying to put things into motion. To finally make the SOB pay for what he’d done.

Killing him was too easy. Too quick. No. There was a much better way to exact revenge.

Take what he loved best.

Break it.

Break her.

I just didn’t realize that in the process of destroying the girl, I’d destroy myself.

“I only want your pain.”

I hadn’t understood what those words meant, not really. Not until he made me understand.

I noticed Adam the very first day he moved into my building. He was a badass on a bike in a thousand-dollar suit. When he looked at me, it was with a hunger just this side of obscene.

Our meetings were strange, accidental. Too coincidental. There was something about Adam. Something I couldn’t put my finger on.

Something I couldn’t resist.

He told me I didn’t know him. He warned me to run as far from him as I could. He was moody. Dark. I’d found it romantic. I didn’t know and wouldn’t realize until it was too late that he’d meant for me to heed his warnings. That some part of him had hoped I would run, that I would escape him.

For too many years, vengeance had fueled him. It had taught him hate. The object of that hate? My father. And me? I was the means to my father’s end. Adam would destroy my father by destroying me.

I accused him of being a monster, of being no different than those who took his sister, but even in the harshest moments, all I could see in his eyes was pain. And like a fool, all I wanted was to touch that darkness.

To make it light.

Retribution is a full-length, stand-alone Dark Romantic Suspense novel. NO Cliffhanger. Intended for mature readers.

“Offer still stand for a drink?” I asked, not sure what the fuck I was doing.

“Are you going to make the decision for me if I don’t choose correctly?” Elle searched my face. My rejection earlier had apparently hit harder than I’d expected.

I chuckled and placed my hand at her back to guide her toward our building. Inside the elevator, I shoved her up against the mirrored wall, caging her in with my forearms bracketing her face while she stared, her expression one of a deer in headlights, her big crystal-blue eyes so fucking innocent all I could think was she needed to close them, to stop seeing me. And so I did the only thing I could to make that happen. I kissed her. I kissed her sweet little mouth, one hand cupping the back of her head as my tongue pushed past her lips to claim hers, her taste like warm honey as rain cooled on our skin. The bell sounded, and the door opened. My forehead to hers, I gazed at her still-flushed face, taking the brown paper bag from her hand, kissing her once more before leading her to her door. Her fingers trembled when she handed me the key. I unlocked the door and let us in, kicking it shut as I pushed her once more against the wall, devouring her mouth, my cock like steel against her soft belly as her hands traveled up along my arms to wrap around my neck. I led her down the hallway and into her bedroom, our bodies always touching, unzipping her hoodie along the way.

“Wait. I need a shower.”

“No.” I kissed her again, stripping the hoodie off her and tossing it aside.

Her hands searched my chest, pushing my sweatshirt off as I reached for the hem of her tight T-shirt.

“Adam.” She pushed at my chest. “I need to shower first.”

“I said no.” I yanked the top off so she stood in a sports bra, running pants, and shoes, the strip of exposed belly trim and petite. I peeled the sports bra off and licked the trail of sweat between her breasts before seating her on the bed. Kneeling between her knees, I looked at her, at her small, high breasts, the nipples pebbled, her hands first on my shoulders then on my head, pulling me to her. I took one full breast into my mouth and she moaned as I sucked, pulling back slowly until I had her nipple trapped between my teeth. She watched me as I did, her pupils dilated, her eyes black with the tiniest sliver of blue around the dark. She looked fucking amazing, and my cock would not be patient tonight. Not this first time.

Pulling my shirt over my head, I tossed it aside and watched her face as she scanned the tattoos covering my chest and arms. Ink to give me strength, to make me remember. She opened her mouth, in awe perhaps? But I didn’t give her time to study me, time to read what was written there. Instead, I sucked her other breast while working her shoes and socks off then gripping the waistband of her running pants. She lifted up slowly as I peeled them off her. She wore no underwear. I pushed her backward on the bed so she lay down, her legs parted. I looked at her pussy, bare but for the little strip of neat, dark hair above her slit. With my thumbs on either side of the lips, I spread them open. She leaned on her elbows and watched me, her breath coming in short gasps as she waited for me to take her in, pretty little pussy lips gleaming pink, her clit now uncovered and swollen, the scent of her stronger for her run.

I met her gaze before bringing my mouth to her sex, her gasp filling my ears when I closed my mouth over her clit, her hands on me, pulling me closer as she ground her hips up into my face like a greedy little slut.

“That feels. Oh…” Her hips bucked. “More. Please more.”

Pushing one finger into her cunt, I licked her pussy before sucking hard on her clit, sliding a second finger to join the first as she began to whimper until, finally, she called out my name, the groan coming with it a deep sound from her chest as she came on my tongue, her taste so fucking sweet I could eat her forever.

Josie's review

4.5 stars

OH MY WOW, where do I start with this review? First let me start my saying, Retribution is not a soft romantic read. The story is tough, tangible as is the pain and love the characters experience. Retribution and the words written by this author had a deep seeded effect on me. Even hours later I am still lost in this story. The story is entrancing, intense and filled with so much drama and suspense that it left me gasping at every page. Once I started I could not put this down. Ms. Knight brings us issues such as sex trafficking, suicide, degradation, violence and the damaging effects it leaves in its wake. The story is challenging, shocking, gritty and devastating.   The writing was outstanding, I was so caught up in the story and the characters that I felt everything they were going through. The author does not shy away from giving readers some cruel, powerful and suspenseful and hot scenes. I could keep going on and on.

The two main characters Adam and Elle were just the most intense and awe-inspiring characters I have had the pleasure to read about. The connection and chemistry between the two was palpable and undeniable. Adam at a very young age experienced the pain of his sister’s kidnapping, torture and suicide. He was privy to first-hand accounts of the torture and vile things she experienced. Naturally he has not been able to get over that trauma. For the past 15 years he has been waiting for the perfect time to seek vengeance. Adam is determined to take Elle, the daughter of the man responsible and punish her the same way his sister suffered.

Elle and Adam were nothing at all like I expected, both were strong, determined and fearless individuals. Despite the circumstance of their relationship, there was an intense sexual attraction as well as a connection. I loved reading about Adams inner struggle and internal battle to avenge his sister, but also his battle to cherish and keep Elle safe. I want to say I thought from the synopsis that I would hate this man, but I did not. Yes his intentions were sinister, malicious and tenacious, but there was also an immediate need to be close to Elle. Elle too surprised me, because despite the torture, degradation and humiliation she suffered she was able to see behind Adam’s dark side. She understood his pain. Elle and Adam will both experience a betrayal and deceit so strong that everything they thought and believed will shift the balance of their future. If you are looking for a dark and gritty read, this is your book. This book will test your patience and have you gripping your kindle.

Dark Perception (A Corde Noire Novel) by Alexandrea Weis Cover Reveal

Title: Dark Perception
Series: A Corde Noire Novel
Author: Alexandrea Weis
Genre: Dark Erotica
Release Date: February 22, 2016

Born with a gift, Melinda Harris can see visions of the future.
Nathan Cole is the man who wants to possess her and her power.
A member of the elite Corde Noire Society, Nathan introduces Melinda to his dark world of pleasure and pain. At first, Melinda likes what Nathan teaches her, but then her visions begin warning her to the terrible secret her handsome Dom is hiding.
Nathan has plans for her beyond his bedtime adventure. He wants her to make her his … completely.

Nathan gently removed a stray strand of hair from her face and placed it behind her ear. As he stared into her green eyes, the images of the two of them came blazing back to life, even more powerful than before.
“You’re doing that on purpose!” she shouted, and slammed her flute down on the bar.
“What?” Nathan seemed astonished by her reaction.
She backed away from him. “You’re thinking those thoughts.”
“What thoughts?”
Melinda searched his eyes while he inched closer.
Nathan’s mouth pressed into a thin line, adding to the tension in the air. “I think I should go. You’ve had a long day. We can talk again tomorrow after you get settled in. We will need to go over my agenda.”
What’s wrong with me? Get a grip.
Running her fingertips over her forehead, she tried to clear her mind. “What agenda?”
Nathan picked up his glass of champagne and downed the contents. “I have meetings scheduled this week and next about that property development we spoke of the other day.” He turned his eyes to her.
“There’s a formal cocktail party at the home of a New Orleans socialite next weekend. She’s interested in my plans for that property and wants to talk to me about funding the project. You’re to accompany me to the party and all my meetings, then you can tell me what you feel about these people.” His eyes traveled over her T-shirt and torn jeans. “You’ll need to dress professionally for the meetings, and you’ll need a formal gown for the party. I’ll have Bob take you to Canal Place for some new clothes.”
“I can’t afford new clothes, Nathan.”
He raised his brown eyes to her. “I’ll take care of that, not to worry.”
“You’ve given me this apartment, furniture, a new television. I can’t have you buying me clothes, too.”
“Melinda, you’re my assistant now. I can’t have you escorting me places dressed like that.” He motioned to her clothes. “You need to look the part.”
Melinda wanted to argue with him, but she thought better of it. He wanted to buy her some new outfits, what of it? After all, this is what she had always wanted, to be taken care of.
“Yes, Nathan.” She gave him a weak smile.
“Good girl.” He abruptly headed for the door. “I’ll come by tomorrow evening and we can go over my itinerary in detail. I have a new cell phone coming for you tomorrow, as well as a credit card. Use the card to buy your clothes and anything you may need for your job.”
“A credit card? Are you sure you want to trust me with that?”
Nathan smirked with amusement. “Just make sure you don’t go too crazy. I still have to justify it all to my accountant at the end of the month as a business expense.”
“Is that why you’re telling everyone I’m your assistant?”
He frowned at her. “What do you mean?”
“If you tell people I’m your assistant, even though you already have a secretary, don’t you think that will look funny?”
He squinted his eyes, appearing interested in her reasoning. “Funny, in what way?”
“Perhaps everyone thinks I’m not here as an assistant, but as something else.”
“What else?” he questioned with a glimmer of mischief in his eyes.
“You know what else, Nathan.” She turned away, but he held her arm.
“What else, Melinda?”
Melinda gazed into his dark eyes and then she knew. The images she had seen earlier of them together were his. She could feel it as sure as she could feel the warmth of his hand.
Nathan let her go. “I hired you to be my psychic, that’s all. If others read more into the relationship than that, it’s their problem.”
Despite what he told her, Melinda knew Nathan wanted her, but something was holding him back, something she could not see. In her mind’s eye, she searched for an answer, but only foggy images came through.
“I’m very happy you’re here,” he said, and then he leaned forward and kissed her cheek.
Melinda almost grabbed for the doorframe to keep from falling to her knees. The unexpected wave of electricity from the caress of his lips was catastrophic.
“Get some rest,” he told her. “We have a big week ahead, and you have your work cut out for you.”
Confused, Melinda watched him make his way back to his penthouse. Perhaps he didn’t send those images to her.
Was it me?
Melinda quickly shut the door and threw her body against it. “Oh, I’m in trouble.”
Right after Melinda spoke the words, a wave of fear enveloped her. She turned to her living room, and as quickly as it had come, the feeling departed. She gazed about the room, reaching out with her mind to whatever entity had called to her, but nothing came.
Shaking it off, Melinda picked up a box and carried it to her bedroom. When she stepped into the hall, the doorway to the storage room was wide open and the light inside was on. Setting the box on the floor, she went to the room and looked around. Nothing appeared to her, and there were no moans or rattling of chains. But as she stood in the stark square room, the hairs on her arms stood up. In her mouth, the acrid taste of dread. Melinda fought her instinct to flee, and instead opened her mind.
“I feel your fear,” she pronounced.
Then a woman’s soft voice whispered in her ear, “Run.”
Melinda’s eyes flew open. She backed out of the room, flipped off the lights, and shut the door. She stood in the hall staring at the handle on the door as her trepidation faded. There was no lock on the door, no way to secure it. She had a sudden urge to make sure this door stayed closed, because what was inside of that room scared her.

Beth's Review

4 stars

I first fell in love with Chanel Cleeton’s writing when I picked up her Capital Confession’s series. Between the Shadows is a romantic suspenseful mystery type of read and I must say, this is not the type of story I normally read, but loving the author’s writing so much, when I saw that she had a new book coming out, I knew I had to read it.

X and her younger sister have been at the Academy for the past 9 years since their parent’s death. This is the life they have known and have been taught; to be an Asset, a trained assassin. But the life she has known for the past few years has been just turned upside down and she no longer knows who to trust and who is playing her. But she now must take what she’s learned and knows to try to figure out a way to get her sister out of the academy and stay alive all at the same time.

Let me start off by saying that this was definitely a suspenseful thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.  From the moment I picked this up till the moment I reached the very last page, I was left in complete suspense, my nerves completely shot and pretty much ready to bite every last one of my nails off.   So with that said, I couldn’t read this one fast enough and did just that reading this in a little over a day. I had to know what was going to happen, would the bad guys get X or could she save both herself and her sister. There truly was never a dull moment in this book, it was jammed pack with lots of action including some of the hot and sexy kind too.

I loved X, she was such a strong and very real character. Her life has not been easy and she had to grow up quite quickly after her parents death and do things that we can’t even imagine.   She is a trained cold hearted assassin, but deep down, even though she won’t admit it, she still has a heart. She feels remorse for the lives she has taken and she loves her sister and is willing to sacrifice her own life to save her sister from having to become what she has had to become.

Luke was hot and sexy and a really great character, but I must say it took me a while to really connect and warm up to his character. At first I just couldn’t feel the connection or the attraction between him and X. But I will say, once I finally did, I was totally in love with him. When these two finally connect, it is totally off the charts hot. I think all the danger really added to the hotness of it all.

Overall this was a really enjoyable action packed suspenseful read. It was so very well written and was quite a creative story.   For those that enjoy this type of read, you will absolutely love this story. Although I didn’t enjoy this one as much as her Capital Confession series, I put that more to the fact that this type is read is not a normal read for me and I think with all the action playing out in the storyline, more than I am normally used to, it played a part in me connecting with both the characters and the story.

“Jake! Where the hell are you? We should’ve been out on the water by now!” Shit, Jake thought. The old man didn’t sound good today. He wondered if he even slept. When Jake left early this morning, his old man hadn’t come home yet which could mean so many things.

Jake looked over to June who was decent and breathed a sigh of relief as his dad walked through the clearing. If his dad was just minutes earlier he would have seen June. The thought sickened Jake.

June stood up as soon as she saw Mr. Daniels, her cheeks flushed pink from embarrassment and she hoped he had no idea what they had been up too.

“Hi, Mr. Daniels,” she said.

“You again, huh? You’re the reason Jake isn’t where he’s supposed to be, aren’t you?”

June didn’t know what to say. She heard Mike Daniels say unkind things to Jake, but he had never been rude to June before. Jake reached June and slipped his hand in hers and gave her a look that said don’t answer him.

“I’m coming now, Dad,” Jake said. June was instantly sad that she had to leave Jake.

“I’m good at cleaning fish. I bet I’d be a great help on the boat Mr. Daniels,” June offered up ignoring the glare Jake gave her. She knew he didn’t want her around his old man, but she also knew her time was coming to an end.

Mr. Daniels was quiet and thought for a moment and said, “Fine. Let’s go.”

Jake felt it low and in the pit of his stomach that something about this was a bad idea, but when June squeezed his hand and said, “Please,” he couldn’t deny her.

The fishing boat was not a luxury boat. It was a dirty, slightly rusty boat, with large nets hanging off the front of it, and other fishing contraptions off the back that June had no idea what they did. When she thought of fishing, she thought of how her dad did it with a pole, a couple of beers and a day out with friends. There were poles attached on the side of the boat and baskets attached to the opposite side. It became very clear to June that this was not a leisurely trip down the river.

Jake cringed when June sat on the bench that he knew had dried fish guts staining it. He hated that her pretty dress was going to be ruined before the day was over. He hated even more, when he saw his dad take the whiskey bottle to his lips before pushing off their small dock. He never wanted June to be around his dad, and for once, he instantly regretted giving in to her quiet plea to go with them. He was shocked his dad agreed in the first place.

The boat pushed off the dock and Jake dropped cages to catch crawfish and he explained to June that they would sweep back around and grab them on the way back.

“Less talking. More work,” Mr. Daniels yelled more angrily than necessary at the young couple.

June quickly asked, “What can I do?”

Jake tensed at his dad’s tone and then tensed again when he watched him take the fifth of whiskey to his lips finishing the bottle.

Eventually, they reached a spot on the river where Mr. Daniels swore the fish would be biting. Jake showed June how to bait and cast out a line, taking his time in making sure she learned it right.

“If I’d thought this was going to be a day of you trying to get in your girlfriend’s pants, I’d have thought twice about letting her tag along,” Mike Daniels spat at the two, jealous that they had each other and angry that he no longer had his sweet wife. She was always the only person who made him good. Without her, he had nothing. He never felt connected to Jake. Jake always occupied his wife’s time and Mike resented that. He hated Jake even more for it when he no longer had her.

Jake cringed again at the vulgar words his dad used around June, mouthing, “Sorry,” to her.

June responded by squeezing Jake’s hand and for the first time she got a small glimpse at what Jake went through on a daily basis. Her heart hurt for him and she was going to do her best not to let Mr. Daniels harsh words get to her.

Mr. Daniels pushed past the two and intentionally shoulder-checked Jake. Jake knew not to stand up to his old man, especially not when June was there, so he gritted his teeth and tried to check his temper. Jake was angry that his dad was acting like this in front of June. He could take it, but didn’t need for June to put up with it.

Mr. Daniels threw a line out, stationed his rod and then cast another, doing it all rather clumsily. The boat swayed side to side and Jake thought there would be no swimming for the pair tonight, the river was far too choppy. It was one of the reasons he didn’t rush to the boat. He never thought his dad would want to fish in this.

June squealed with excitement when she felt a tug on the line. Jake told her to reel it slow at first and let the fish think that he was getting the bait, that way the fish would really get hooked. She did as instructed and after a few minutes of give and take on the line, she reeled in her first fish. It was small, too small to sell, and so Jake showed her how to unhook it and then he threw it back in. Jake caught several large fish while his dad had yet to catch one.

The clouds looked heavy and low, signaling to Jake that a bad storm might be coming.

“I don’t think we should stay out here, not if we’re going to pick up our baskets on the way back,” Jake said to his dad.

Mike Daniels looked furiously at Jake. He knew when to call it quits. It was his boat. He’d been fishing on this river since he was a boy. Maybe he shouldn’t have had that extra fifth of whiskey with breakfast-who was he kidding-for breakfast, but it didn’t matter he knew when to call it quits and that wasn’t yet. He needed more fish. He needed a bigger haul. He lost big on the tables last night and if he didn’t come up with money to pay Mr. Stevens there would be hell to pay. He’d already lost the farm and that shit son of his couldn’t even catch enough fish to help pay his debts. What good was he, anyways?

“The fuck did you say, boy? I’ll tell you when we’re ready to go.”

June flinched at Mr. Daniels tone but tried to not let Jake see it had affected her. She also tried not to flinch when Mr. Daniels threw out his line and snagged his rig against a bunch of turned up branches that the coming storm was pushing down the river.

“That’s a fifty dollar rig. Get your ass in the water and go get it,” he said to Jake. Jake wanted to argue about the fast current and how dangerous it was. He also hated the thought of leaving June alone with his old man even for a second, but he could tell by his old man’s tone that today could get even worse than it already was. Jake stripped off his jeans, into his boxers and quickly jumped into the murky water, looking back at June once before plunging under the water.

June’s stomach tightened. Every second Jake was in the water was a second she felt like she couldn’t breathe.

It happened fast. Mike Daniels was too close to June for comfort.

“You know I saw you two together. I didn’t figure you for a whore, but at least my boy is getting some. I’m thinking I should get a taste. See what all the fuss is about that’s been keeping him so busy.”

June froze. She didn’t want Mr. Daniels to come any closer to her, but she needed to make sure that Jake was okay.

Jake emerged from under the water near the brush. The water was choppy, and there were more limbs below the surface than above. He reached out and tried to unhook the rig, but the tumultuous waters pushed a sharp jagged stick into his ribs. He felt it cut his skin, but he had to go on.

“Stop!” he heard the faint cry from June, and turned his head back to see why she was yelling. His dad had his hands on June and was groping one of June’s breasts.

“No!” she yelled again and he watched as she struck out and smacked his dad. He needed to get to her, he knew what happened when he tried to fight back and. Fighting back only made it worse.

He couldn’t swim back fast enough to the boat. His arms burned with how hard he was trying to get to her. The sky opened up and sent large pellets of water everywhere. Jake could barely see through the dense rain. He pushed himself as hard as he could but felt like he was failing when he saw his dad grab her by the back of her hair and force her to her knees, with his other hand around her throat. He knew his dad was sick, but he never imagined him trying to do something as vile as this.

Jake reached the boat just as his dad’s belt buckle was being undone and his world went black.

The first time I met Brody Easton was in the men’s locker room.

It was my first interview as a professional sportscaster.

The famed quarterback decided to bare all.

And by all, I don’t mean he told me any of his secrets.

No. The arrogant ass decided to drop his towel, just as I asked the first question. On camera.

The Super Bowl MVP quickly adopted a new hobby—screwing with me.

When I pushed back, he shifted from wanting to screw with me, to wanting to screw me.

But I don’t date players.

And it’s not because I’m one of the few women working in the world of professional football.

I’d date an athlete.

It’s the other kind of player I don’t date.

You know the type. Good looking, strong, cocky, always looking to get laid.

Brody Easton was the ultimate player.

Every woman wanted to be the one to change him.

But the truth was, all he needed was a girl worth changing for.

Turned out, I was that girl.

Simple right?

Let’s face it. It never is.

There’s a story between once upon a time and happily ever after…

And this one is ours.

A new song had just started, and I was enjoying his company when a voice behind me said, “Can I cut in?”

My head whipped around, even though I had no doubt whom the gravelly voice belonged to.

Michael was gracious. “I hate to share. But I suppose I have been hogging the most beautiful woman at the event.” He let go of my hand and stepped back with a gentlemanly nod. “Thank you for the dance, Delilah.”

Again Brody Easton had caught me off guard. Before I knew it, I was dancing with the arrogant jerk. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled my body tight against his. Way tighter than Michael had held me.

“Good to see you again, Lois Lane.”

The man had balls; I had to give him that. I looked him straight in the eyes. “Nice to see you with clothes on, Easton.”

“Do you prefer me without?”

“I prefer you on the other side of the room.”

He chuckled. It was a hearty laugh. “That’s what happens sometimes when you decide you want to hang out in the men’s locker room.”

I tried to pull back, but he tightened his grip and held me in place. I craned my neck. “Let go of me.”

“That’s right. No.”

“I can scream at the top of my lungs.”

“I’d like to hear you scream.” His tone made it clear he meant he wanted me underneath him while I was doing the screaming.

“You’re an asshole. You know that?”

“I do. You asked me that yesterday. For a reporter, you should really try changing up your questions more frequently.”

My eyes bulged.

Easton shifted his hand down to the small of my back before twirling us around the dance floor. Figures the prick can dance.

“Are you seeing anyone?”

“You can’t be serious?”

He ignored my comment. “Would you like to have dinner tonight?”

“We just ate.”

“Dessert at my place, then?”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Did you hit your head at the game yesterday?”

“On a diet, huh?”

“Yeah. That’s it. I don’t want to go to your place for dessert because I’m on a diet.”

“Well, that’s just a shame.”
