New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Violet Duke debuts an emotional series about letting go, starting over, and trusting in the redemptive power of love.
Emma Stevens is ready for a fresh start in Juniper Hills, but she still lives with the impossible guilt of her past: having failed to rescue her little stepbrother from a fire that decimated her childhood home and her family. Her next-door neighbor may have been the one to drag her out of the burning building that night, but it doesn’t exonerate him since he caused the fire. Not even when he shows up fourteen years later to help salvage her bakery.
Jake Rowan may not have been able to save Emma’s brother from the fire, but at least he was able to save his own brother. By taking the fall and the punishment for him, Jake managed to protect his older brother’s future…but it cost him the girl of his dreams.
Now Jake finds himself on Emma’s doorstep once again. Not to save her life this time, but to repair it. And more importantly, her heart, if she’ll let him.
I always make the mistake of giving too much away in a review or write a really long one. I was thinking how would be the best way to describe Emma’s and Jake’s story and the only thing I can really think of is FABULOUS!
How can 2 people learn to move on from a tragedy and a heart wrenching past that tore the love they once shared as kids apart? The emotions in this book were raw and vary from anger, pain, remorse, guilt, love and happiness. Emma and Jake have suffered and deal with the guilt after a fire tore through Emma’s house, stole the life her younger brother and Jakes broken promise. What everyone believed true about that faithful night is far from truth.
I enjoyed how the author took us on Jake’s and Emma’s journey to acceptance, forgiveness and second chances. We see their inner struggles dealing with the internal and external scars from that tragic life but we also see them learn to live again. Both have not lived happy lives. I felt the author dealt with the issues of guilt, lack of knowledge, forgiveness and understanding beautifully. I felt Jake, Emma and Meghan’s suffering but also their willingness to live life again.
This book is not only tears, nope the author gives readers some funny moments as well. You can feel the connection and chemistry the characters shared by the practical jokes they played on each other and their level of comfort with one another. This was a great second chance story, sweet, painful and full of promise and I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
