Beauty and the Mustache

Knitting in the City #4

There are three things you need to know about Ashley Winston: 1) She has six brothers and they all have beards, 2) She is a reader, and 3) She knows how to knit.
Former beauty queen, Ashley Winston’s preferred coping strategy is escapism. She escaped her Tennessee small town, loathsome father, and six brothers eight years ago. Now she escapes life daily via her Amazon kindle one-click addiction. However, when a family tragedy forces her to return home, Ashley can’t escape the notice of Drew Runous— local Game Warden, bear wrestler, philosopher, and everyone’s favorite guy. Drew’s irksome philosophizing in particular makes Ashley want to run for the skyscrapers, especially since he can’t seem to keep his exasperating opinions— or his soulful poetry, steadfast support, and delightful hands— to himself. Pretty soon the girl who wanted nothing more than the escape of the big city finds she’s lost her heart in small town Tennessee.
This is a full-length novel, can be read as a standalone, and is the fourth book in the ‘Knitting in the City’ series.
I had the best swoongasm with Beauty and The Mustache.
It doesn’t take an over-the-top alpha gazillionaire to get my heart flutters or my stomach flipping. It just takes Drew.
Okay, okay…not just Drew- I’ll never forget Quinn!
PS- it didn’t hurt that almost every character had a beard. If you know me, you know I’m a beard nympho! I had to excuse myself every time I saw a teaser or one of the brother pictures because I had to regain my composure, get my legs in working order again. Get my brain off about the bearded glory!!
It is not in me to say that anyone takes rank over Quinn, so I’ll say this Drew and Quinn are neck and neck in what I think the ideal book boyfriend is. There is no way I can decipher of the two who was better. It may be best to saw Drew is a beard above Quinn! I’ve read every single Penny Reid book and loved them all. When I saw the first cardboard heart I was sucked in. Nico and Alex served up some thing different but Drew and Quinn are the epitome of perfection.
When I saw I was at 50% my heart beat faster and I got super nervous. Once you hit 50% of a book it just goes way to fast and then it’s over. I didn’t want this to be over. I was loving it way to much to see the end. In fact, I started writing this review half way through because I was holding on and not letting myself rush to the end. I wanted to sprawl out on the pages and throw a temper tantrum because I didn’t want it to end.
I definitely needed to simmer down. Drew had my heart beating a million miles a minute; he had my chest hot and my belly disconcertingly-yet deliciously-achy.
Early on I would have bet my purse that this is MY best book ever! It’s the type that will always stay loaded on my kindle and it the type that I will buy two paperbacks. One that will stay pristine and gorgeous and the other will stay next to my bed with warn edges from me reading it over and over. It deserves to be read over and over. I want it to be like my favorite movies that I can recite word for word. I want to memorize Beauty and The Mustache, word for word, cover to cover. In the beginning I was instantly laughing out loud, getting looks from my husband and son. I was smiling at how awesome Drew was with only his eyes (not forgetting the beard) and how witty Ash was.
Her brothers were cunning and masterful at getting my to burst out laughing. They were her brothers, which meant even though they tricked and fooled her. Pulled one too many pranks growing up, they loved her. Always. No matter what. They proved that over and over even when she thought otherwise. They each had something that made me love them more than the other.
“Don’t cry. I always hated it when you cried.”
“Yes, who do you think left you bunches of wildflowers outside your door when Jethro or the twins pissed you off?”
“That was you? I always thought it was Momma.”
“No, dummy, that was me.”
I must not forget the girls. The GIRLS!! Even though they are miles away from Ash right now, they are ever present. They make this series. They are all the most comical and brilliant ladies ever written on a page. I wish I could be so on point as they are all the time. I wish I was one of the knitting group girls!!
“I like…my men…like I like…my meat…”
“Hot with a red…with a red…with a…”
“Don’t say it!”
“Hot with a juicy red center!”
Now, the next part I’ll talk about I promise to try and hold in my enthusiasm. I said try, so don’t hold me to it.
This book was beyond romantic. By the end it became extremely sentimental to me. It wasn’t lovey-dovey, chocolate drizzle hearts and flowers, there were no eye rolling at the pure romance. No this was more than that. It was real and true and meaningful. This book itself is an aphrodisiac.
Drew and Ash were the hit of this story. She was spunky and vocal right from the beginning and Drew is quiet and although come to find out very vocal, just in his own way. I was able to picture every detail in my head. I felt like I was there, in every moment.
“I swear to the god of moonshine, I am going to pink your nipple straight off your chest!”
Drew is sort of a loner. He’s part of the Winston family. But thankfully only like an adopted son and not the real thing. I would be heart broken!! Drew had many talents, although he wasn’t the most outrageous adoptee-Winston, he was definitely the most brainy one. Drew didn’t have to speak, his body, his face, his eyes, his mouth, his entire HIM showed what he needed to vocalize. You can tell he questioned so much and didn’t want to push. But, certain things he for sure knew without a doubt- Ash!
“I’m never going to be able to think of you as a sister.”
“How about a cousin?”
“None of my feelings for you are familial. I’m sorry if that upsets you, but I’m not good at playing make-believe, lying or pretending-as you might have noticed.”
“Here’s the thing, Sugar, you tell me what you need, and I’ll give it to you.”
I am enamored with Andrew. Truly and madly. I want him for myself. Thankfully I have his words that I can re-read over and over and never tire from hearing. Penny out did herself writing Ash and Drew’s story. She had me before, but I have never fallen in love with characters and words than I did with Beauty and The Mustache.
“You arrived. I saw you. You spoke. That was it. I gave up nothing, but I lost everything.” -Drew

SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).
By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.
