I had no idea what this book was about the blurb itself didn’t give much away. I just knew this was going to be good as well as test me, and boy did it ever test me. This book was written beautifully well and the slow burn was perfect. I hate cheaters and politics is not my cup of tea but RC Martin did not disappoint.
I wanted to dislike the characters but the more the story goes on the more we get to see how unhappy and dissatisfied they both were. Michael Cavanaugh is a governor, married and is known for his honesty. His life is structured as is his marriage. Their lives are built around his position and his wife gets stuck playing the role. Blaine is young and also learning the ropes of life, she knows there something missing but hasn’t found it. Their meeting was just fate and right from that first meeting sparks go off.
This story between Mike and Blaine is raw, gritty and forbidden. It was perfect. I know cheating is taboo for so many but the dual POV and the slow burn helped me see that it’s not always just so cut and dry. The love both of these characters developed ran so deep. When all is said and done, there’s not a character to hate in this story. They both struggle with what’s happening to them but the heart doesn’t lie. Heartless took me out of my comfort zone and I’m not ashamed to say I loved this book and highly recommend it.
