LIVE ** Lost Rider (The Coming Home Series) by Harper Sloan ** Beth’s Review

In Lost Rider, the first Western romance in New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Harper Sloan’s Coming Home series, an injured rodeo star encounters an old flame but will she be just what he needs to get back in the saddle?

Maverick Austin Davis is forced to return home after a ten-year career as a rodeo star. After one too many head injuries, he’s off the circuit and in the horse farming business, something he’s never taken much of a shine to, but now that it’s his late father’s legacy, familial duty calls. How will Maverick find his way after the only dream he ever had for himself is over?

Enter Leighton Elizabeth James, an ugly duckling turned beauty from Maverick’s childhood—his younger sister’s best friend, to be exact, and someone whose heart he stomped all over when she confessed her crush to him ten years back. Now Leighton is back in Maverick’s life, no longer the insecure, love-stricken teen—and Maverick can’t help but take notice. Sparks fly between them, but will Leighton be able to open her heart to the one man who broke it all those years ago?

Written in the vein of Diana Palmer and Lindsay McKenna, this Texas-set series is filled with sizzle, heart, and plenty of cowboys!

I have read several books from the Corps Security series by Harper Sloan and loved them and must say I truly have forgotten how much I love this author’s writing.  I am usually not a lover of cowboy romances but as soon as I read the blurb for this one I knew I had to check it out.

Maverick Davis left Leighton James heartbroken ten years ago after she poured her heart out and then stomped all over it.  He had to get out and leave Pine Oak behind and went on to live his dream.  Now ten years later that dream life of being a rodeo bull rider can be no longer after one too many concussions and he is forced to return home and face all the heartbreak he left behind so many years ago.  Leighton has never truly stopped loving him and is now faced to realize that face upon Mav’s return.  Will she be able to forgive him and move past all the hurt to finalize have the life she dreamed of.

This one I must say sucked me in from the start and when I soon realized this was much more of a second chance romance than the blurb led me to believe, I truly was a goner.  I am a huge sucker of second chance romances, as like with most of them and especially in the case of this one, the emotion and love that is shared between the characters is so powerful that you can’t not help to feel it.  The moment these two got in the same room, you could not only feel the chemistry and attraction these share but you could feel the passion and the depth of their love.  But they both are stubborn and have a lot of hurt and memories of the past they need to get past in order to heal and move forward.

This book was such a great mix of hurt but also healing, so much sweet tender love, and so much hotness.  The chemistry between Maverick and Leighton was off the charts and I absolutely loved both these characters.  I must say thought that cowboys don’t normally do it for me but Maverick Davis sure did.  Oh how I loved Maverick.  He was your typical hot sexy cowboy but oh how he was so much more.  He truly loved Leighton with everything he had, you see that right from the start.  He may have hurt her but he was young and stupid, trying to escape the horrible life he was living under his father’s rule and it was the only way he thought he could truly escape.  But I love how he is back and determined to not only fix but heal all the hurt he has caused.  I loved Leighton’s character.  She was such a strong female lead and I loved how determined she was, especially when it came to Maverick Davis.  From the moment these two first stepped into a room together you could truly see that they both had a piece of themselves missing and that piece was each other.  They completed each other and the love they shared was truly an epic love story.

I loved the premise of the book and truly loved how the author played out the storyline.  The book itself was a great length but never did the story drag or fall flat nor was the progression slow.  But at the same time, even though this book was filled with a fair amount of emotions and angst as well as some twists and turns I truly didn’t see coming, this book was never filled with over the top drama nor that back and forth play of being back together then torn apart, which I honestly expected to happen with how the storyline began to play out.  So I must say, this book, although I knew I would enjoy it having loved this author’s writing and her characters, I was pleasantly surprised that this book didn’t play out like I thought it would, in the predictable manner most second chance romances do.  This book was not only about Leighton and Maverick finding their way back to each other and living the life they both always wanted and dreamed of, it was also about  them as well Quinn and Clay healing form the past.   I absolutely loved this book hard and am so excited that this is not the end for this great cast of characters, I love that we will get Quinn’s story and next hopefully that will be followed shortly after by Clay’s.

About The Author

Harper Sloan is the New York Times, Wall Street Journal & USA Today Bestselling Author of the Corps Security series, the Hope Town series and the stand alone novel, Perfectly Imperfect.

Harper lives in Cumming, Georgia just a few hours north of her hometown of Peachtree City. She (and her 3 daughters) enjoy ruling the house they dubbed ‘Estrogen Ocean’, much to her husbands chagrin. Harper has a borderline unhealthy obsession with books; you can almost ALWAYS find her with her eReader attached. She enjoys bad reality TV and cheesy romantic flicks. Her favorite kind of hero–the super alpha kind!

Harper started using writing as a way to unwind when the house went to sleep at night; and with a house full of crazy, it was the perfect way to just relax. It didn’t take long before a head full of very demanding alphas would stop at nothing to have their story told.
