MAHALIA: I didn’t want to be born. Something went wrong along the way, and I’ve been unsure about my purpose on this earth ever since. If I was hit by a car, if I fell off a cliff, would anyone care? Living in Cornucopia with my sister wives under the watchful eye of our husband, Allred Lee Chiles, has turned me into a robot, unable to feel or think for myself. I’ve been looking through a cloudy glass, not trusting myself or others.
But a man came down from the mountains. I’m captivated by Gideon Fortunati, his name expressing all that he is—keeper of my fate, master of reality, teacher of my future. Gideon’s purifying power has enlightened me about my capabilities. I don’t have to let The Prophet take my daughter and marry her off to that old man. I was guilty of dirt and sin, but I can take my life back now.
GIDEON: I was exiled to this godforsaken wasteland in Utah by our MC Prez. My entire existence has been a struggle, a futile tirade against my maker. I ranted against my fate, and in answer I was sent Mahalia. A naive victim of that twisted false Mormon sect leader. He’s tried to mangle her like a spineless puppet, like he has all the other women—the other girls.
Before I met her, I was a child. Now I’ve given up childish ways, and I can see everything in a mirror, face to face. Faith, hope, and love were all handed to me, and the greatest of these is love. I’ve come too far. There’s no surrender now.
It didn’t look that far on the map.
This is the not my first rodeo with this author, I have read her Bare Bones MC books and loved them all. Ms. Wolfe is a talented author that goes outside the box and is not afraid to touch on subjects that some might shy from. This book is no exception. This particular story deals with underage arranged marriage, beatings, forced sex, male prostitution and a Prophet of the Mormon Church with his own dark vision. The story is told in alternate POV’s and the author shows readers how the two main characters lives changed after their first encounter.
Gideon was exiled to Utah by the President of the Assassins of Youth after hitting on his old lady. Gideon job’s was to help Prophet Allred run guns and set up a new chapter in that end. Gideon is your typical Biker. Loves booze and women, but he never expected that his punishment would send him right into the path of a beautiful olive skin woman, Mahalia. It was nice to see how this tough, strong and rough biker fell for this beautiful, smart and innocent woman. Right from their first encounter he had this need where he wanted to protect her, but he was confused by his feelings.
Mahalia is different from the woman in her church. She choose to stand out with her red garb Her and her daughter are both sent to the Prophet after her husband dies where she is married off to him. Mahalia is miserable with her life, but that is the only life she has known. She does what is demanded from her, right down to the beatings from her husband and the cruel and vicious sexual acts he demands. When she cross paths with Gideon she is immediately taken by this gorgeous man. She has always thought of ways to leave, but never had the courage. When her daughter Vonda is to be sealed into marriage with an older man, she knows she must run.
Things are not as they appear behind the gates. There are so many secrets that have been long buried. What I enjoyed most about this story was the development of Gideon and Mahalia’s relationship. I love how it transpired over time. The two had so much in common, their need to be safe, to belong and their love of poetry. Gideon and Mahalia discover a love neither knew could exist. There are so many twists and turns that emerge during this story, my heart was jumping at nearly every page. I cried for Mahalia and the women that suffered at the very hands of their husbands and for the children that endure such pain. Can Mahalia and Gideon get their HEA? Will the prophet let Mahalia and her daughter escape to freedom? Will all the secrets behind the Prophet and his followers come to light? If you love a MC romance read with a dark twist than this is a book for you. You are going to want to click.
